How to make me-time a habit | The ultimate guide for busy moms ❤️

Jan 06, 2023

As a busy mom, habit forming can seem like an impossible task. 🤷‍♀️ You’re already stretched thin managing the everyday tasks that come with your family, so how can you possibly fit anything else into your schedule?

The other day, I was under the impression that Ikea would be a great place to entertain the kids and enjoy a meeting in peace…

Nope!

Within minutes, my partner was minding his business (instead of the kids), and they were roaming around, getting their foot stuck in between the cracks of the playground, and howling for attention. 😳

Naturally, I was racing across the floor, zoom video call in hand, apologising profusely to the woman helping him and to my marketing team for all the noise.

Mind you, the playground was empty, so they were calling for me to play with them while I was trying to have a conversation.

It’s moments like these that I’m reminded why embedding me-time as a habit is essential! 💗

But it’s definitely easier said than done. 🙂 If you’ve tried to form a new habit but broken it within days because of yet another interruption, know that there is a method to the madness!

When we’re running around on autopilot, habits give us a mental break and sense of relief because they enable us to get something important done on autopilot as part of our daily routine.

But starting a new habit often feels like an uphill battle. 😫

That’s why we’ve rounded up a realistic guide for how you can make me-time a habit to kick-start the new year on a strong note!

HOW TO MAKE ME-TIME A HABIT | THE ULTIMATE GUIDE FOR BUSY MOMS 🌷

💠 START SMALL

It can be tempting to try and go all out with this new habit, like hitting the new gym, starting a new blog or getting to inbox zero. While I will always encourage you to dream big, I also know that it’s more motivating when you can achieve your goals in bite-sized, actionable steps. That is why I’m encouraging you to set your intention with this habit and start small. Maybe you give yourself 10 minutes each morning to put on your favourite face mask, or maybe you allot 30 minutes each week to sitting in a cafe and enjoying your favourite childhood treat. Whatever it may be, select something small that brings you joy.

💠 PRACTICE HABIT STACKING

The secret to creating a habit that sticks is habit stacking!

Habit stacking is a way to break down habit forming into small, achievable goals. By tying new habits to existing habit patterns and setting aside a few minutes each day for habit-building, you can create habits that stick.

For example, if you brush your teeth each morning and evening, stack a habit to this existing habit. Maybe you do a 2-minute meditation each morning after brushing your teeth. Or perhaps you stretch for five minutes right before bed - a habit that can help you relax and aid in better sleep.

💠 SET REMINDERS TO COMPLETE YOUR HABIT

You’ve got a million things racing through your mind, it can be easy to let this new hair slip between the cracks. Thankfully, you don’t have to do the work on your own anymore; technology can automations can do this for you! Simply set an alarm on your phone—several if you need, to ensure you remember to complete your daily habit!

💠 CARVE OUT TIME IN YOUR CALENDAR

Tough love. You have to MAKE time as a mom, otherwise it’ll never happen! The easiest way to do this is to block out your calendar for the habit you’re creating. It doesn’t have to be hours, but you do need to honour the time you’ve set aside.

💠 STAY POSITIVE

Life-happens! Just because you’ve missed a day or two doesn't mean you should drop the habit altogether, you can pick up where you left off and keep going. It’s natural to ebb and flow from time to time, what counts is committing to the habit and continuing! Over time, you’ll notice a significant improvement in your wellbeing, relationships, and life.

These habit-stacking goals don’t need to be intense or time-consuming. Even something as simple as meditating for one minute each night before bed can help you build better habit-forming skills.

With patience, dedication, and a bit of encouragement, I know you can make me-time a habit.
